My concern with driving many cars in remote areas is that in the case of a
breakdown, few mechanics would be able to fix them.
A South African birder who recently stayed with us told me that her car was
immobilised by a faulty alarm system. The problem was that she was in a
park in Namibia. She was completely out of mobile range and, of course,
couldn't get out of the car because of the lions!
Once in Arnhem Land a steering rod came loose. We fixed it ourselves with
parts from a wreck on a nearby deserted outstation. However, until that
chance discovery we were preparing to cut pegs out of hard wood and tie them
in with bush string! We hoped that would get us to the nearest inhabited
outstation.
