The situation in the UK is confused - most birdwatching and wildlife magazines
and books do capitalize bird names (and also plant names and sometimes other
things such as mammals and amphibians).

However, BBC Wildlife (a magazine with a large circulation) and the RSPB
(membership 1 million) started to use non-capitalized names a few years ago,
and have persisted with it despite many objections. I am not even sure of the
reason for doing it - is it to make wildlife names "more accessible" - whatever
that might mean? It certainly seems to be the more populist organisations which
are keenest on non-capitalization.
