Little terns in Botany Bay

Hi,

Following up on Chris Corben's brilliant suggestion: It would seem that a half dozen "Osprey type nesting platforms" erected on the mound opposite the boat ramp and liberally coated with axle grease on the pole and a nice sandy nesting habitat on top would be a good idea. The platform could be about 3 sq. m or so and probably provide enough area for two/three pairs of terns each. In fact platforms could stretch all the way north on Foreshore Drive to the old Cooks River mouth where traditionally there were many Little Tern nests.

The mound opposite the boat ramp that is now neatly sign-posted for dune regeneration (or stabilisation?) and covered in various plants (native and otherwise) used to hold up to 30 pairs of Little Terns before it was re-vegetated. (Alan Morris may have some exact numbers on this). It also used to be the mound where most of the waders chose to roost and may supply some safer roosting sites.

Cheers and thanks Chris for some stimulating thinking.

Alan
