Last Friday I dropped into the NPWS office at Kurnell to inform them of the nesting Little Terns and was told that they would see about fencing the site. I will be going out there early tomorrow morning to check on the birds progress.

A quick update on colonies on the south coast.

Lake Wollumboola, Culburra, 29 nests, 10 chicks.

Lake Conjola, 21 nests, 27 chicks. 1 Fairy Tern nesting, A pair of hooded Plovers have 2 chicks and the Pied Oystercacthers have 1 fledgling. There was a Sanderling on the beach 26/12/2006.

Lake Wollumboola is open and there are lots of waders present. On Sunday I had a quick count. 124 Bar-tailed Godwits, 90 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, 20 Red-necked Stints, 1 Ruddy Turnstone. There were many more waders but were to far away to identify. Gang Gangs were in the carpark as usual.

NPWS on the south coast have been carrying out extensive fox baiting at these two colonies over the past several years. In the 2005-2006 season there were 40+ fledglings at Lake Wollumboola, the most successful season ever at this site, and 36+ fledglings at Lake Conjola. This season looks like being another successful one with no reports of foxs at either colony.
