 ... It's a heartbreaking story of great ignorance and stupidity and you have to ask how could such a mentality exist. You might even breathe a sigh of relief and say "Thank God, we've changed". Sadly, I reckon we haven't changed one bit. .... 
 
 
Umm, I wouldn't be quite as glum as that - as a psychiatrist and social observer, I'd say that a proportion of the population (half?) has taken on board concerns about the environment and a proportion of those are involved in changing their behaviour to varying degrees. The real problem is hoodwinking by groups with an interest in continuing their merry ways (japanese whaling/Gunns/various land developers/ substitute insititution here), though this is dwarfed by the financial hardship in the 3rd world (economic necessity for short term gain blowing environmentla issues out of the water.)
 
But anyway, back to birds - given all the talk of foreign invaders, why are Cattle Egrets 'nice' and Colombo Crows 'not nice'?
