Hi Graham and All,
Why collect only feathers when you can collect the whole owl! (providing it is not too decomposed of course!-in which case you would just pluck a feather).
But it isn't too hard to just pull up by the subject (only if in a safe driving situation) put on a pair of gloves  (if not available an inside-out plastic bag will do), pick up the subject, pop in a plastic bag, tie it up and put it a dark cool spot, when you get home pop it in your freezer  until you can  drive the bird to the Museum, where it will gladly be accepted and used as a specimen where it will always be available for study.
Make sure correct records are written down of where specimen was located, cause of death and date.
This goes for all dead birds, native or non-native,rare or common.
