You only see about 10-20% of the spam that is sent to the list
address. The rest is filtered out by Vicnet spam filters or ones
I've put in place. To get better spam filtering we would need to do
one or more of the following:
Only subscribers can send messages (we tried this for a while but
it's more trouble than it's worth -but I might try it again to see
if anything has changed)
Buy better spam protection from Vicnet if they offer it
Move the list to another provider that offers greater spam protection
Move the list to another provider that offers more customisable
features
Help people to learn how to recognise spam better so they can delete
spam without opening it
Even then, I'm not sure how we can eliminate ALL spam. I know it's a
nuisance - but at least none of the larger messages are getting
through, so the strain on inboxes should not be too great.

This is further evidence that the spammers aren't harvesting
individual addresses from the archives. They are sending the spam
to the list address.
So, how are they doing this and is there a way of stopping it?
Presumably they need to be subscribed in order to send to the list,
don't they? Perhaps a better method of confirming subscription
addresses is needed. (I can't remember whether there is any
confirmation, it's been so long since I subscribed).
