Penrhyn Estuary

If you take the trouble to look at the proposed development at Penrhyn Road at:

www.sydneyports.com.au/botany/main.asp?pageid=235

you can see that the area that currently attracts most of the waders
would be enclosed on all sides and cut off from the open water, apart
from possible a narrow strip along the beach parallel to Foreshore
Road (maybe elsewhere not apparent from the images). Two points:
first, there would be loss of a relatively small amount of good wader
habitat, at the south-eastern end of the area, adjacent to the
current container point. This is good especially for roosting waders
at high tide, and would be a real loss. Second, and assuming we
accept Phil Straw's expertise regarding the effect of enclosing good
wader habitat, the opportunity for reducing disturbance could well
enhance the rest of this area no end. The disturbance here can be
horrific: jet skis, dogs running wild through wader flocks, fishing
boats coming and going, the beach front with bathers or fisherman
every few yards. If it could truly become a sanctuary, then it could
become an import refuge for waders in Sydney, and God knows there are
few enough of them.
