Different people tend to get fanatical in this way about different
things -
gear collecting [gear freaks]
train spotting
stamp & coin collecting

In the end it comes down to the "joy" of collecting things.  I like
climbing mountains, but when you climb a mountain for the peak-bagging
points / notch in the belt, then you are doing it for the wrong reasons.
