Have they got rid of the many of Pigeons that compete with the Pink-eared
for nesting hollows in the dead gums at Gum Swamp ????
Last time I was there they were bullying them out of the hollows, a
Peregrine Falcon was trying his best to reduce the numbers.

Hi List,
Sorry for the 2 empty emails; I did write them on the phone as a passenger
in a car but the email looks fine in my sent folder!

I just wanted to say that we have just made it home from Lake Cargelligo
with huge difficulty; the only route out involved driving all the way north
to Cobar!! We stayed at Forbes on Monday & the river was lapping only a few
metres from our cabin at the caravan park & was noticeably higher in the
morning even though it had been meant to have peaked during Sunday night. We
only have a 2 WD and the main road into Forbes was closed behind us after we
drove through water nearly up to the bottom of our doors. Back Yamma was cut
off by a torrent of water so that was disappointing but at this point we
still expected the water to start dropping and expected to go there on our
way home...you can see we have no experience with these sort of conditions!!
Gum Swamp had high levels of water & lots of mud but we still found
Blue-billed Duck & lots of Pink-eared with ducklings, but no Freckled Ducks
& few other water birds.
We headed out Condobolin with no real worries until we came around a corner
to see rushing water as far as the eye could see...oh dear. Back-tracking we
returned to Forbes & the police advised going via Parkes. No-one suggested
we shouldn't be continuing on [although we probably couldn't get through to
Sydney already as the road into Forbes was cut off as was the road to West
Wyalong]. At Condobolin we nearly came to grief at the staggering amount of
water across the showgrounds but found another way over the river at Willow
Bends & crossed one more stretch of deepish water [that was closed minutes
later apparently] & made it to Lake Cargelligo without much more difficulty.
However, Tuesday night it rained all night & a bit more the next morning &
the rivers rose and rose so by the time we intended to leave on Friday it
looked like we were trapped until we finally worked out it was via Cobar or
stay for another week or 2!

The WTP is very full [& not many birds] & Chat Alley is a lake [sadly no
Orange Chats to be seen] & Whoey tank was a wildflower meadow which I
imagine is not its normal look!

We still enjoyed our trip but I wouldn't recommend anyone else heads out
that way for a while.

>From Jenny Stiles

P.S. We did find lots of Major Michell's Cockatoo, Cockatiel, and several
Black-eared Cuckoo and plenty of other birds on our wish list & it was
certainly an experience to remember.

Hi all
no mention of Mudgee/Capertee area in the bulletins I have seen so I assume
this is still OK for a visit? (Presumably too far east/too far upstream?)

Here is an update. It is getting bad, when they start evacuating parts of
Forbes. Best thing anyone who is thinking of going into that area, think
again. I know the area well, and I wouldnt go anywhere around, even with a
4WD. If you really have to go, ring the NRMA, Lachlan, Condo and Lake
Cargelligo Shires and the SES.
