Bill, the Big Island is worth spending a bit of time on. I spent two weeks on 
there, in the late 90's, up in Volcanic Village. It was great trundling around 
the island in a rented ute/tank. I wasn't as in to birds, as I am now, but 
managed to get an interesting list. Lots of other things to disract you if you 
have broadish interest in natural history. I recommend a chopper trip over the 
top and any vent activity.
