The Subantarctic Shearwater P. elegans breeds only on the Chatham and
Antipodes Islands in the Australasian region and on Tristan da Cunha and
Gough Is. in the southern Atlantic. All 'Little Shearwaters' that breed on
Australian Islands (off SW WA, Norfolk Is, Lord Howe Is) will remain as
Little Shearwater P. assimilis. However, P. elegans has been 'reported' off
Victoria and Tasmania. So BARC submissions now required!

Subject: Subantarctic Shearwater
The IOC has just accepted the split of Subantarctic Shearwater from Little
Shearwater. It will be included in the next update (IOC5.4). I have Googled
it. It appears to be the New Zealand birds, but it also mentions that it
breeds in the southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
So is this the Australian species. i.e those breeding off the coast of
Western Australia (Abrolhos Islands, islands off Albany & Esperance, etc)?
Or would it just be a visitor to Australia?
Thanks
