Hi all
I was the main one who considered that the Sand Plovers at Lake
Woolumboola were Greater but the banding data considers that they are
Lesser based on the migratory path taken by Lesser and not Greater as below.

Dear Chris Brandis, Thank you for recording the details of the flagged
wader that was recently sighted. We appreciate your action in reporting
this information, which will contribute to our understanding of the
migration of birds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
If you are not already doing so, could you please send in future
sightings via the AWSG website form if possible. This form can be found
at http://www.awsg.org.au/reportform.php. Please check the information
given below and advise me if any details appear incorrect.
A Lesser Sand Plover Charadrius mongolus was sighted in a flock of 5
birds by Chris Brandis at: Lake Wollumboola, near Culburra, NSW,
Australia 34deg 59min 0sec S, 150deg 46min 0sec E on 16/01/2015 with
flag(s) as follows:
LEFT leg: nothing/unknown on tibia (upper leg) above nothing/unknown on
tarsus
RIGHT leg: yellow flag on tibia (upper leg) above black flag on tarsus
This bird was flagged in Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia), approximate
co-ordinates 56deg 50min N, 156deg 10min E, which uses the flag
combination Yellow/Black. The resighting was a distance of approximately
10,224 km, with a bearing of 184 degrees, from the marking location.
Plumage described as: Non-Breeding. This bird was reported as a Greater
Sand Plover, but has been seen by several other people. There has been
some confusion over whether it was a a lesser or greater. However, the
flags are from Kamchatka and the Greater Sand Plovers don't make it
through there so it has been asumed it is a Lesser.
Thank you for contributing to shorebird research studies in the East
Asian-Australasian Flyway. The information you have helped to collect is
valuable for scientific and conservation purposes. Please report to us
any further flag sightings you may make in the future.
This can be direct to or via the electronic form
on the Australasian Wader Studies Group website:
http://www.awsg.org.au/reportform.php .
