Fairy Martin (Hirundo ariel) (c 30+) breeding at Red Banks, Kangaroo Island, 2
Oct 2014; nests in varying stages of construction, ranging from just commencing
to complete. Only western end of Red Banks inspected; likely more birds
breeding along clay cliffs further east. Rarely sighted on KI; first reported
breeding here in early 1990s.
Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (100s) migrating W past Cape du
Couedic, FCNP, Kangaroo Island, 5 Oct 2014; estimated 100 passing per minute; c
6,000 per hour; low density stream building each day.
Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) (1) in paddock at Seager's Road, just E of
Murrays Lagoon, Kangaroo Island, 2 Oct 2014. Nikki Redman per C Baxter.
Shy Albatross (Thalassarche cauta) (3) in amongst migrating Short-tailed
Shearwaters; heading west, Cape du Couedic, FCNP, Kangaroo Island, 5 Oct 2014.
Limited time available for viewing; saw these in space of about 20 minutes.
Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) (c 150) still residing at Duck Lagoon,
Cygnet River, Kangaroo island, 9 Oct 2014. Been present since start of
September 2014.
Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) (7) breeding; pair incubating eggs on
nest at Stokes Bay, Kangaroo island, 7 Oct 2014.
breeding; pair with 3 newly hatched chicks, Seal Bay beach, 9 Oct 2014.
