Hi all
Expect this armchair tick in the next BARC checklist revision. I may be lat=
e to this but I=92ve just noticed the latest IOC v4.3 (July 31 2014) splits=
Silver-backed Butcherbird based on Kearns 2014 (see http://www.nature.com/=
ncomms/2014/140530/ncomms4994/full/ncomms4994.html#figures )
I can=92t read the full paper so please don't quote me but looking at the f=
igures I gather the potentially troubling mtDNA paraphyly apparently separa=
ting the NT (colletti) and Kimberley (argenteus) clades has been tested und=
er various hypotheses, and satisfactorily explained as recent low-level sec=
ondary contact between colletti and the eastern (surprisingly - not western=
) form of Grey Butcherbird during the last glacial maximum.
I now realise Clements split this some time ago. But I note without surpris=
e the BirdLife Oz =91Working List=92 has the Silver-backed subspecies mixed=
up.
In other possibly-late-to-the-party news I see IOC have taken the potential=
Grey-faced Petrel and Crested Shrike-tit splits off the table for now.
Martin
