Published sightings for the week ending 3 Aug 2014.
 Sun 3 Aug Wandering type Albatross, Shy Albatross, Buller's Albatross
wattamolla-royal
national park.
Plenty of albatross off wattamolla today with up to 300 shy albatross ,5
wandering type albatross including 1 juvenile and 1 Buller's albatross.
Also there is a spangled drongo just up from the car park.

  Scarlet Honeyeater Riverside Park Chipping Norton
I have never seen a scarlet honeyeater here previously, in 10 years of
walking around the lake. Identified by sight and call. Unfortunately the
pictures are of dreadful quality but I can post one if desired.

 Sat 2 Aug Swift Parrot Leppington
Three birds observed in a Cumberland Plain Woodland remnant at St Andrews
Road, Leppington.

  Swift Parrot Mulgoa Nature Reserve
A total of at least 15 Swift Parrots seen or heard at three different
locations at Mulgoa Nature Reserve today during the Swift Parrot/Regent
Honeyeater survey weekend.

  Noisy Pitta Irrawong Reserve
Good views of Noisy Pitta from the track running from the board walk to the
small waterfall.

  White-necked Heron Lane Cove Golf Course
1pm a single bird was on the 9th tee, about 20m from River Road and 10m
from the bushland. I watched it for about 10 mins while it stalked the area
but caught nothing. It was only mildly disturbed by the golfers hitting off
and moved about 5m then returned to the original spot as they left.

 Fri 1 Aug Pink-eared Duck, Yellow-billed Spoonbill Alumy Creek between
Grafton and Junction Hill
1 Yellow-billed Spoonbill and 40+ Pink-eared Ducks perched on logs in water
and floating on water.

3+ Freckled Ducks perched on logs and 150+ Pink-eared Ducks mostly foraging
with a small number perched on logs in water.

20+ Fairy Martins flying under culvert along the Lawrence Road. First
returning record of this migratory species.

Shrike-tit Southgate State Forest
1+ Black-chinned Honeyeater heard calling, 4+ Rainbow Bee-eaters foraging
above the canopy and landing on dead branches of trees, 2+ Dusky
Woodswallows foraging above the canopy and perching in trees, 1 Crested
Shrike-tit foraging in a eucalypt.

  Red-kneed Dotterel, Black-fronted Dotterel, Yellow-billed Spoonbill,
Black-necked Stork Brothersons Swamp, Coutts Crossing
1 Red-kneed Dotterel, 4 Black-fronted Dotterels, 1 Yellow-billed Spoonbill
and an adult male Black-necked Stork with waterfowl around drying remnant
of wetland. Very few recent records of Red-kneed Dotterels locally.

  Eastern Reef Egret, Southern Emu-wren, Yellow Thornbill Cullendulla
Nature Reserve
Along the Mangrove Walk. Dark morph Eastern Reef Egret sitting on a rocky
headland for about 2 hours. Emu-wrens not far off the track at the start of
our walk. Yellow Thornbills overhead in several trees.

1 Spotted Bowerbird feeding in tree tops near the toilet block.

  Peregrine Falcon Hat Head
One was seen over the trig on top of Korogoro Point by Hastings Bird
Watchers on an outing to Hat Head. Several Osprey, a Brahminy Kite, a
Kestrel and a pair of White-bellied Sea Eagles were also seen here.

  Swift Parrot Cowan
Six Swift Parrots observed flying between trees in and around Cowan Public
School. Apparently, attracted to area by flowering planted Forest Red Gum.

In paddock about 20 km west of Temora on Burley Griffin way, a single Emu.
I've travelled this road regularly for many years, first time I've seen an
Emu anywhere near Temora

  Grey Goshawk Yellomundee Regional Park
Single bird perched in a dead tree beside the river. Also worth noting is
the fact that the hundreds of Silvereyes that were in the park 2 weeks ago
have all gone. Small numbers of Yellow-faced Honeyeaters are moving through
the area from nth to sth.

Ground, Yuraygir National Park
One bird observed in low coastal scrub behind fore dunes at edge of track.

  Noisy Pitta Yuraygir National Park, Minnie Water
Pitta observed twice in past 2 weeks on track at edge of village which
leads to Illaroo Picnic Area. One bird appeared to have a white throat like
a Blue-winged Pitta and photos have been attempted.

  Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Chestnut-rumped Heathwren Royal National
Park--Wattamolla
Atop the cleft south of the twin tanks. Unable to count New Holland
Honeyeaters, but the interval between sightings was seconds rather than
minutes over a two hour period, even while driving in from Bertram Stevens
Dr. Continuous noise from Little Wattlebirds skulking in the heath. At
beach lookout, Red Wattlebird, Australian Magpie, Crested Pigeon, Superb
Fairy-wren (breeding pair plus eclipse male).

  Rose Robin Wattle Forest, Royal National Park
Male seen at the transition from parkland to scrub beyond the end of the
road. Also seen: Satin Bowerbird (M) and Pied Currawong feeding from
fruiting tree nearby, Eastern Spinebill, Grey Fantail, Lewin's Honeyeater,
Little Corella, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Australian Magpie

  Swift Parrot Mulgoa Nature Reserve
At least 4 SP seen on Dillwyina Trail. Probably more as 4 most seen at one
time. About 500 metres along trail on the right in Grey Gums just past the
Ironbarks. Observed from 8:30 AM to 11:15 AM, still there when I left.

Returning Fan-tailed Cuckoo. The object to the left of the bird is a rat's
tail left by a Black-shouldered Kite.

Spotted Quail-Thrush seen on side of access road to the lookout. Must be
the best Rockwarbler site in the State. Ever so grateful to Tim Thurston
and co for suggesting we look there! [Moderator's note: Rockwarbers can be
seen regularly in the car park at Evans Lookout]

At approx. 10.30am a Whistling Kite was circling over the tennis courts and
adjoining Kingsford Smith Oval.

Adult landed on power pole near River. Three Grebes on River.

  Black-tailed Native-hen & male Blue-billed Duck Lake Wallace, just west
of Lithgow
Black-tailed Native-hen feeding with Eurasian Coot , Dusky Moorhen & Purple
Swamphen on short grass close to the boat shed jetty. Wary and walked into
the reeds when fisherman and dog walkers went past on the dirt road.
Excellent scope views of white spotting on flanks and green frontal shield
and two coloured bill.

St wetland area
A.P.Austin Field - Restless Flycatcher perched on fence post, feeding on
ground-very active along with neighbourly Willy Wagtails, 12 Nutmeg
Mannikins feeding nearby. 2 Black-fronted Dotterels on rough ground near
wetlands behind St George Soccer Stadium.

Pitta heard calling at dawn and dusk (also on 27 & 28 July), Bee-eaters
present (7+) 26-28 July, grey morph Grey Goshawk, Bronze-cuckoo heard

picnic area.

  Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross (BARC submission in prep), Wandering
Albatross and Bullers Albatross Offshore--Wollongong pelagic
Highlight of the SOSSA July 2014 trip was an Atlantic Yellow-nosed
Albatross, which did a few passes at the shelf break. It was well
photographed and a submission to BARC will be forthcoming. Other good
sightings included 2 Wandering Albatross, a number of Antipodean/Gibson's
Albatrosses and 3+ Buller's Albatrosses. Numbers of Indian Yellow-nosed,
Black-browed and Campbell Albatrosses were also high. Other sightings
included 2 White-fronted Terns, 4+ Brown Skuas, 6+ Fairy Prions and 6+
Providence Petrels. Noted absences were any Giant-Petrels or Cape Petrels.
It has been nearly 2 years since there was a Cape Petrel sighting on a
SOSSA trip off Wollongong. Photos will be available on the SOSSA website,
