Birdline Tasmania

Published sightings for the week ending 11 May 2014.

Sat 10 May Whimbrel (2) Orielton Lagoon
Two Whimbrel nearby 3 Eastern Curlew on the edge of the samphire and mud flats off Shark Point Road. Also saw 13 Common Greenshank, several showing breeding plumage and a number of Red-necked Stint. There were many Double-banded Plover, a number of which had breeding plumage. Unfortunately we didn't take a camera because of the light drizzle which became rain while we were there. The dull conditions did allow us to approach more closely than I managed on previous excursions on the mudflats.

Nankeen Night Heron Queechy Lake
10 mixed adults/juveniles in central willows.
Rodger Willows

Fri 9 May Pink-eared Duck Ellesmere Dam (Mud Walls Dam)
5 Pink-eared Ducks still present, as well as 12 Blue-billed Ducks and 8 Black-fronted Dotterel.

Thu 8 May Purple Swamphen Windmill Lagoon
2 Purple Swamphen observed foraging in shallow water of coastal heath margin approximately100 metres south of Windmill Lagoon. Prominent tail flicking and their scarlet forehead shields alerted me to these birds through the heath. This species is not commonly seen in this area.
