Published sightings for the week ending 19 Jan 2014.

Sat 18 Jan Buff-breasted Sandpiper (Subject to submission to BARC) Hexham Swamp, New South Wales
A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was initially found and photographed by Rod Warnock at around 9am on Saturday, 18th January, on Hexham Swamp, followed soon after by Christina Port (whose image is attached). People are out there again this morning (Sunday, 19th January) but it has not been relocated. The bird was apparently seen on the right side of the track (heading south) in one of the larger ponds, associating with Sharp-tailed Sandpipers. Please refer to the email I posted to Birding-aus on Wednesday regarding access to the site. A link to the archives is pasted below where you can read the email (select text and paste into your browser if link is broken) http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/birding-aus/2014-01/msg00244.html [Moderator's note (NH): If accepted by BARC (to me there is no doubt that it will be accepted!) this will be the 8th record for Australia: see 'Index of Case summaries' here: http://www.tonypalliser.com/barc/barc-home.html]

Thu 16 Jan Reported Franklin's Gull Lake Barambah (Bjelke-Petersen Dam), Queensland
Hot, dry, windy, overcast. Water level is well below the dam wall. Franklin's Gull (1) Immature - Adult non breeding. Observed for 15 minutes from within vehicle at very close range, with Simpson and Day open. All diagnostics narrowed to this species. Location. Across the dam wall, first park left, approximately 200 metres along dirt track. The bird was lying quietly, in the vicinity of 2 caspian terns, and other water birds. It did not flush, but returning 30 minutes later, it had disappeared. 1 hour more failed to relocate it, but foraging across the water were silver gulls, caspian terns and gull billed terns. [Eds. Rob Morris - whilst the 'immature / adult non-breeding' description throws up a question - I've put this on Birdline immediately so that others can check it out this coming weekend. No photos have been seen. I have added the 'reported' as it is a national rarity which needs a BARC submission].
