Thanks to everyone who provided info - eventually ended up at Warriewood
Wetlands which proved an exceptional site even in the middle of the day.
Surprisingly there was a dead shearwater (I assume dead Short-tailed from the
recent beachcast - it had no head) in Irrawang Reserve - does any of the locals
know anything about it?
When driving down Powder Works Road (Elanora Heights) around 11:30 a flock of
White-throated Needletails (difficult to estimate numbers but was spread over a
number of kilometres until near Garden Road) was swooping. It was assumed at
least part of the same flock (around 50 birds) was seen at the wetlands
themselves, many swooping below tree level which is always spectacular.
I also came across another flock driving through the township of Urunga on the
north coast today (about 10:30) - again difficult to estimate numbers while
driving but present over a few kilometres.
On both occasions weather was humid and cloudy but no rain at the time.
Hopefully the next flock I spot while on the far noprth coast (and SEQ) will
have a Fork-tailed or two.
