Hi Bob,
I was at Fraser's Hill last August and found some good birds, while
you can walk it is quite hilly and bird waves can be spread out. You
will see more if you have a car. I hired a car from Avis and drove up
from KL airport. By Asian standards driving was quite easy and
relatively calm. Much of the birding is from roads, the Telekom loop
being one example, where you drive around till you come across a bird
wave. The car park at Jelai resort (now closed) used to be a morning
hotspot, common birds like Silver Eared Mesias come in quite close
there and sunbirds feed on the bottlebrush. The Hemnant Trail and
Jalan Magar were quite productive for me. I believe in April the
Silver breasted boatbill is breeding, so much easier to find, but is
more common lower down around the gap and on the Gap road.
A lot of the resorts are quite run down. I stayed at Shazan Inn, it
is well run and comfortable, if a little tired, but they actually do
maintenance there. Prices are reasonable:

I just ate at the restaurant in the hotel, food was fine and prices
were good (by Australian standards, you can get a lot cheaper
apparently). Nasai Goreng was about 20 Ringgit. You will want to buy
Birds of Fraser's Hill by Morten Strange. It is about 20 ringgit and
available at the hotel and has a map and details about the main trails
and birding spots. If you get a car fuel up before going up the hill
at the last big town, there is no service station up there.
Let me know if you have more specific questions.
Chris Ross
