As a regular traveller through Singapore Airport, I have just read with great
interest a very good review in a UK birding magazine of a new pocket guide to
the birds of Singapore - "A Naturalist's Guide to the Birds of Singapore" by
Yong Ding Li, Lim Kim Chuah and Lee Tiah Khee (published by John Beaufoy Books,
Oxford, 2013 and retailing in GB for £9.99 for the paperback edition (yes
9.99). I know that a considerable number of Birding-Aus readers will have the
same interest.

At that price, with 178 pages, 300 colour photos and one coloured map, it is
obviously ideal for anything from stopovers of several hours (time for a visit
to the Botanical Gardens) to those taking up residence there. Apparently the
Singapore List is almost 400 species (extraordinary for a relatively small
island), and the book provides ID, including photos, for the 280 commonest. The
review says that the book "is packed with useful information and tips, including
a map which details the best dozen sites and nature reserves." Apparently it
also contains a complete checklist, details on the abundance and seasonality of
species and has useful contacts in Singapore. Sounds like a real bargain.

Angus Innes.
