The Australian, like many major newspapers, claims to have a strict
editorial policy of not digitally manipulating news photos.  So on the
face of it The Australian did not manipulate the photos, was unaware
of the manipulation and would have disclosed the manipulation if it had
been aware - if it proceeded in publishing the photos. Birdlife Australia
hopefully was also unaware.
