Australian Pelican
Alice Springs Waste Stabilisation Ponds
Very cold, early morning visit during water sampling.
Australian Pelican (1) Observed some very unusual behaviour. Bird was initially flushed from long grass ~40m from the water by the 'B' ponds. Also flushed from the same location were three Wedge-tailed Eagles. The pelican headed for the water, but 10 minutes later was back with the eagles. After watching what I thought was a pelican in a weakened state getting attacked by eagles, it turned out that the pelican was actually feeding on the scraps cast off from a freshly killed Black Swan by the feeding eagles.
