Even if this site is considered too sensitive to allow public access why is
John Young refusing to provide recording of call? How can we protect this bird
if we don't know the extent of its range and particular habitat requirements.
Proper management which may involve restricted access and restrictions on use
of playback at known localities [such as with Noisy Scrub-bird] would be a more
realistic option.
I note in a similar case with the rediscovery of Jerdon's Courser in southern
India 1986- also a cryptic nocturnal species, the site was secured and
surrounding land-holders issued with playback devices with the recorded call to
assist in surveys. This information has led to the establishment of wildlife
reserves and staved off a number of major developments.
No doubt John has best of intentions but hope for sake of everyone and the
Parrot he doesn't take his secret to the grave.
