Seen at 1225hrs over Grubb rd, being harassed by 4 Red Wattlebirds

Along McDonald Park Rd. N. of Ararat, a total of 13 Swift Parrots, plus a few Tawny Crowned Honeyeaters

Sat 29 Jun Hooded Plover Thirteenth Beach [northern side of Black Rock Sewerage Plant]
Hooded Plover: Adult x7 [4 wearing red flags] Juvernile x2 feeding amongst dried kelp at waters edge with other small group of waders: Red capped Plover and Red-necked Stints.

Broad-billed Sandpiper Lake Connewarre Wildlife Reserve (Lake Connewarre)
Return visit this morning to show Irena the Broad billed sandpiper. Beautiful clear conditions 10c Broad-billed Sandpiper Feeding alone about 400 metres east of car park. Much better views than yesterday. Some dotterels and black winged stilts nearby.

Pink-eared Duck, Spotted Harrier Woodlands Historic Park (Greenvale)
Absolute stunning Spotted Harrier seen hunting over an open area in the back paddock. First record here I am pretty sure and followed up sighting of a lone Pink-eared Duck on the Geriatric Dam.

Lewin's Honeyeater Beechworth Historic Park (Silver Creek)
Lewin's Honeyeater (1). Seen and heard calling in tall peppermint forest by the creek. My first record in North East Victoria, this time of year likely dispersing during the winter. A very rare bird in this part of the state with Eremaea only showing one record near Falls Creek and Birdata a couple of records in the Upper Murray area.

Fri 28 Jun Little Penguin Western Treatment Plant, Werribee
2 Little Penguin seen through scope foraging well offshore in glassy water and calm conditions, not seen here since last July.

Fri 28 Jun Northern Shoveler Lake Borrie, Western Treatment Plant
The adult male Northern Shoveler was still showing well towards the western end of Lake Borrie adjacent to Paradise Rd. The bird spent much of the time drifting with its head tucked under, with occasional quick swims to reposition itself towards the edge of the flock. Flushed (amongst all the other waterfowl) by Swamp Harriers on two occasions.

Freckled Ducks Mill Park Lakes
Freckled ducks were reported here earlier in the year and they are still here. 5 counted on the rocks in the largest lake and 2 distinctly smaller (possibly juveniles) swimming close by. Maybe they bred here?

2 males and 3 females seen together 8.00am this morning.

Thu 27 Jun Black Falcon, Spotted Harrier, Pink-eared Duck, Freckled Duck Limeburners Lagoon/Hovells Creek via Corio
Black Falcon circling high overhead. Sub-adult Spotted Harrier quartering over grassland adjacent to creek. Also 2 dark morph Little Eagles. 3 Pink-eared Ducks on N end of lagoon and 1 Freckled Duck loafing with head under its wing at S shore of lagoon. At least 1 male Flame Robin with 2+ brown birds. Great birds and wonderful winter weather for Geelong Field Naturalists Club Bird Group mid-week excursion.

Wed 26 Jun Black Falcon Thomastown East Reserve
Seen at 2.15pm gliding in from the Thomastown East Reserve to suburban Casey Drive. Attracted by a flock of about a dozen racing pigeons (Rock Doves), which circled high as the falcon soared higher.

15 to 20 Swifties in a loose flock around the reserve enjoying the Yellow Gum blossum and Grey Box foliage.

Eastern Osprey Point Impossible Karaaf Wetlands area.
While watching Brown Goshawk lazily soaring in circles overhead I glimpsed a second bird come into the edge of my field of view and was delighted to observe an Eastern Osprey..I held it in view for a minute or so before it disappeared from view heading up the coast in N/E direction. Also 3 Shy Albatross sitting on water offshore. As a bonus a pod of Dolphins were also present.

Saw it coming in plenty of time to get ready for the superb viewing it gave me. Flying N/E direction in straight purposeful flight .Also flushed male Goshawk from dense roadside vegetation just prior to sighting Black Falcon.

Broad-billed Sandpiper, Pacific Golden Plover Lake Connewarre Wildlife Reserve (Lake Connewarre)
Broad-billed Sandpiper feeding in close proximity to Red-necked Stints gave a wonderful opportunity to compare size and distinctive characteristics of the bill! Also the over-wintering Golden Plover reported on 22/06 was sighted. Many other spp, incl Bar-tailed Godwits, Red Knots, Red-necked Avocets, Black-winged and Banded Stilts, Double-banded Plovers, and many more ... also Blue-winged Parrots ...

A pair of Painted Button-quail were seen this morning at this site. Near the ridge, at the monument overlooking Dight Falls.

Sun 23 Jun Spotted Harrier Rigbys Wetland, Scoresby
At aprox 12.05pm one Spotted Harrier flying over the wetland from East to West and descended into the grass area beside Dandenong Creek. Also one Little Eagle being harassed by two Nankeen Kestrels. Other raptors seen in the one & half hours observing. Two Black-shouldered Kite and one Brown Falcon. Over 250 Purple Swamphen in the water and reed beds at the eastern end of Cell No. 2. This site is surveyed monthly by BirdLife Melbourne. First record of Spotted Harrier.

Mon 3 Jun Spotted Harrier Kilberry Boulevard Wetland, Hampton Park
At 1.15pm one Spotted Harrier being harassed by Little Ravens. Actual location where the HT Power Lines cross the wetland. First time this species seen at this wetland since monthly surveys commenced in June 2007.
