Sooty Owl finding

Hi List,
I hope this isn't too trivial a question, but I am hoping that there is considerable experience of owl finding on this list! We would very much like to see a Sooty Owl [not to mention a Masked & Grass Owl but they will be other expeditions!] and I know they are sometimes seen in the Royal National Park. On Thursday we will be returning nephews to Wollongong from Sydney, so we will have the opportunity of doing some spotlighting on the way back to Sydney. Is right on dusk the best time to hear them calling? How often do they call...if we stopped to listen in an area, how long should we wait before assuming we are not in the right place? I have heard Lady Carrington Drive is a good spot, any other suggestions in that area? I know looking for owls is a fluky business so we will be looking for geckos & mammals too.
Thank you,
Jenny Stiles
