Published sightings for the week ending 6 Jan 2013.

Sun 6 Jan Pectoral Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Pacific Golden Plover, Black-tailed Godwit, Latham's Snipe Werribee WTP
Around 9am there were 1 Pectoral Sandpiper, 1 Wood Sandpiper, 1 Pacific Golden Plover and 1 Marsh Sandpiper amongst hundreds of waders and Whiskered Terns in the ponds just past the Little River Ford on the left/north side of the road. 1 Black-taild Godwit in Conservation pond 35E along wiht a Latham's Snipe roosting in the open. A great day for waders, 19 sp for the morning.

Sat 5 Jan Wood Sandpiper Western Treatment Plant
First time in ages I've had one of these at Werribee! Found it on the third pond running east along on the main road leading from the ford north of Walsh's Lagoon in the south-east corner near the road. Unfortunately bird was right into the sun, so great photos not possible. The pond was chock-a-block full of waders including 3 Marsh Sandpipers.

Cicadabird Bunyip State Park
Four birds located together on Nichols Hut track, 100 metres down from Link rd connection. Birds were calling very loudly which made them relatively easy to find. Also thanks to Tim Bawden who reported these yesterday. Birds provided excellent photo opportunities.

Fri 4 Jan Glossy Ibis ETP Boundary Rd
16 Glossy Ibis seen feeding in flooded paddock adjacent to Thompson Rd. ( South Side ) Also 5 Cattle Egret and many Shelduck present.

Male & female Koel plus possibly another male heard then seen squabbling and koel-ing early am in woodland between Terra Nova Dve & the golf course. A small number(9) of White-throated Needletail getting about at dawn as well.

Great mornings birding with Powerful Owl at Oswin Roberts Reserve and a Collared Sparrowhawk, Lathams Snipe,Sharp-tailed Sandpipers and Red-kneeded Dotterels at Fishers wetland.The Wetland is drying fast making the Spotted crakes very visible.

Powerful Owl Oswin Roberts Reserve Phillip Island
After sighting over 60 possums finally found the owl in the middle of the reserve.It was sitting on a branch in the middle of the fire dam.Only second recorded sighting on Phillip Island after Alan Atkinson,s record at Ventnor on 11th March 2012.Having problems loading photo onto site.

Thu 3 Jan Spotted Harrier (adult) Livestock Way, Pakenham (just near Princes Hwy)
A great sighting of an adult Spotted Harrier just near the turn-off to Koo Wee Rup Road. Landed on a fence-post affording good views. I note a sighting of an immature on the same day very nearby by Steven Davidson.

Pink Robin heard singing from a dense pocket of rainforest along Princes Hwy as we passed through Lind NP. Wouldn't have heard it if we hadn't been forced to a crawl in a massive queue behind a B-double..

Spotted harrier Princes Hwy near Nar Nar Goon turnoff
A nice dark-hooded juvenile Spotted flew across the freeway in front of us whilst quartering paddocks adjacent to the Princes Hwy/Nar Nar Goon turnoff. An uncommon bird east of Melbourne.

Young bird seen close to river. An uncommon species in the area.

Song Thrush. Hoppers Crossing 3029.
At 0831 hours, I observed a single Song Thrush at and around a bird bath in my rear garden. They appear to be an infrequent sighting in this area.

Australian Koel Heard in the bushland reserve on Allens Road at about 8am. It called for about 15 minutes and then seemed to move on. Could not catch a sighting of it.

Very young Mannikin feeding on stalk of seeds. Never seen here before, maybe an escapee.

Powerful Owl Bourke Road Bridge over Yarra
Powerful Owl (2). Pair of Powerful Owls in the usual pine at the bottom of McArthur Road (about 500 metres up the path from the Bourke Road Bridge. One had a headless possum in its talon. Visiting birdo mate thought that was perfect - the same pose as in the Simpson and Day illustration. PS: Went back on 5 Juanuary to find they'd decamped.

Broad-billed Sandpiper WTP (foreshore north of Beach Rd>
This single Broad-billed Sandpiper remains at the WTP. Thanks to the expertise of Joy, this bird was found - the proverbial 'needle in a haystack'. Also six tern species observed and lots of Aust spotted crakes and red-kneed dotterels around.

Banded Lapwing Western Treatment Plant
As reported recently by Steve Davidson and Hedley Earl, a single Banded Lapwing was located on 280 South Rd, just past the major kink in the road heading towards borrow pits. It was mixing with about 8 Masked Lapwings.

Mon 31 Dec Black-faced Monach Wingan Inlet
Forest birds in Banksia trees on the walking track to the inlet, included Bassian Thrush, Crescent Honeyeater, 2 Black-faced Monach.

Masked Owl, Lewins Rail Warangabell, near Coopracambra National Park
Masked Owl calling strongly but proved elusive. Lewin's Rail also heard but not seen. Both species are apparently reliable at this site.

Arctic Jaeger, Common Sandpiper Kororoit Creek, Altona
Arctic Jaeger seen flying east down-stream from direction of ford on Racecourse Road before alighting briefly on creek near fishing huts west of Maddox Rd. It was then set upon by a Caspian Tern that harrassed the jaeger into the air and back west upstream where I lost sight of them above the ford. Caspian tern later returned but no further sighting of the jaeger.13:00hrs,aedst.Also nice views of Common Sandpiper near ford on Racecourse Road.

Black-tailed Godwit Laverton Creek Mouth, Altona
2 Bar-tailed Godwits as well as the previously-reported Black-tailed were present at 12:30. Also saw a Nankeen Night Heron here a week ago.

Banded Stilt, Black-winged Stilt. salt lagoon, St Leonards
I noted approx. 200 Banded Stilt, feeding in shallow water, close to The Esplanade. Also, 1 Black winged Stilt, and a pair of Red-capped Plover.

Sun 30 Dec Blue-winged Parrot Mount Worth State Park
Possibly a new location record for this species (& our first record for the park). A pair foraging on the walking track west of the carpark. Other species recorded during several visits up to 30 December were: Pilotbird, Brown Gerygone, Rufous Fantail, Southern Boobook and Rose Robin.

Fri 28 Dec Olive Whistler Battersbys Landing, Lower Glenelg National Park
One bird (possibly two) observed for a few minutes after hearing its call then whistling back to it. Was right beside the walkers camp shelter near the western landing. Proved too elusive to get any photos of, but got some good sightings none the less.

Five seen in town. The second time I've seen this species in Ararat in December. Is this part of a range expansion for this species?

Tue 25 Dec Red-capped Robin Trawool Valley
Male and three others (maybe a family group) in burgan scrub on north side of valley (south-facing). 9km SE of Seymour Bushland Park where they do occur, but very different habitat.
