The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period
Monday, January 2, 2012 to Sunday, January 8, 2012:

Area: SA

Date: Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Location: Hart Road Wetland, Aldinga.

Australian Painted Snipe (Rostratula australis) (2) Two, probably three in the
lignum swamp just into Aldinga Scrub beside the spillway across Hart Road. The
first flushed from behind the Lignum as I was watching a very confiding
Australian Spotted Crake feeding at the edge of this tiny muddy pool. It flew
past me and dropped into the main wetland. It was pale greyish and heavily
spotted and probably immature. I looked back at the crake and a second snipe
walked out into the pool and froze. This was definately immature with a large
white patch on the upper breast. It then flew a short distance into the scrub.
I retraced my steps and spent a few minutes looking for the first bird, when I
came to the spot again a snipe leapt up and flew into the scrub. My impression
was of a more colourful bird, probably a third.

Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) (8) Eight birds flew up from the main swamp
of this tiny wetland and flew to a dry grassy field just to the north by the
new houses and continued feeding. It is very difficult not to disturb almost
everything in this small wetland. The Musk Duck however seems to be getting
more tolerant of people!

Australian Spotted Crake (Porzana fluminea) (3) At least three probably four.
As indicated above, one was very unconcerned by my presence 15 metres away.
Called repeatedly as it fed and was answered by a hidden bird.

Pied Honeyeater (Certhionyx variegatus) (1) 1 male Pied Honeyeater was at the
nothern end of the park.

Black Honeyeater (Certhionyx niger) (2) With The Pied Honeyeater was a pair of
Black Honeyeaters. Only my first (Black) and second (Pied) record for this
species in 8 years of visiting this place regularly.

Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) (2) Roosting with Pink-eared Duck and Grey
Teal amongst pile of dead branches on islet within lake.

Latham's Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) (1) Gave off rasping call as it flushed
from shoreline of southern end of lake.

Also good numbers of Banded Stilt and Red-necked Avocet. Buff-banded Rail, and
both Baillon's and Australian Spotted Crake were also observed. Tide was low in
nearby inlet at time of visit, thus wader numbers were well down.

area of dirt clods on the land side of the track 150 metres before the Picnic

then 9 flew over head, later 6 found resting in the dead Lignum, all in the
same vicinity as the PG Plovers.
