Barn Owl
National Film and Sound Archive Acton
A Barn Owl was being harassed by a variety of birds in the early am.They cornered the owl in an external stair way and I was able to pick it up and fend the other birds off .As I came up to the top of the stairs holding the owl the various birds started to attack me, I had to run away. I went into the building and exited it from another side hoping the currawongs, maggies, etc., would not see me. I then placed the owl in a tree and it flew off immediately with the attacking birds picking up the chase. I continued to follow the owl hoping to help it but the attacking birds were relentless. I hope it escaped. Why do the birds attack the owl?

Eastern Barn Owl
7th Floor Space 2 Balcony Northbourne Ave Turner
Barn Owl fast asleep on our Balcony when we got home from work. Thought he was not well as one of his wings looked hurt. Also Maggies were bothering him. After calling WIRES vet, RSPCA went out to rescue him, only to have him fly off (chased off by maggies). Must assume that he found the corner of our balcony a quiet place to rest.

Red-necked Avocet
West Basin, Lake Burley Griffin
Flock of 10, maximum 15 Red-necked Avocets flying low and wheeling around the Lake Burley Griffin, West Basin between Commonwealth Bridge and the National Museum of Australia, this morning at about 8.55 am for at least five minutes. They flew close to Commonwealth Bridge and I was able to positively identify them, largely white with black wing tips, long trailing legs, red head, long bill, but the close flying and lack of binoculars made it hard to count exact numbers.
