Published sightings for the week ending 7 Aug 2011.

Sun 7 Aug Baillon's Crake and Freckled Duck Alice Springs Sewage Ponds
A great afternoon at the poo ponds - 2 adult Baillon's Crake showing well in EP7A and 3 female Freckled Ducks out on EP10. An Eastern Great Egret made for another unusual visitor.

Mon 25 Jul Common Sandpiper, Sanderling, Large Sand Plover Buffaloe Creek and adjacent sand flats, Darwin
An early morning trip 0710-0810 hrs to Buffaloe Creek and the adjacent sand and mud flats found 35 species including 2 Common Sandpipers, 8 Sanderlings, 1 Red-capped Plover, 1 Red-necked Stint, 2 Pacific Golden Plover, 8 Large Sand Plovers, 2 Gull-billed Terns, Azure Kingfisher, Yellow White-eyes but no Chestnut Rails.,

Mangrove Robin & Arafura Fantail Palmerston STW
A pair of Mangrove Robins were seen in the mangroves in the north east corner of the fringing vegetation, and an Arafura Fantail in the bush. Also seen were c.80 Whiskered Terns, a few Radjah Shelduck, and a Brown Goshawk close to the STW

Sun 24 Jul Gouldian Finch and Hooded Parrot 5 east of the Stuart Highway on the Edith Falls Road
At a known birding site, on a creek, 5 km in from the junction of the Edith Falls Rd and the Stuart Highway, in recently burnt grass close to the Creek, a mixxed flock of Double-barred, Masked and Long-tailed Finches included 2 Gouldian Finches. Also present were 5 Hooded Parrots, Little Woodswallows, Rufous Whistlers and White-winged Trillers.

Sat 23 Jul Gouldian Finch and Hooded Parrot Chinamans Creek, 18 km W of Katherine
In the strip of land between the Highway and the old road, close to the eastern side of Chinamans Creek, where a recent fire had partly burnt the long grass a mixed flock of birds were observed between 7-800 hrs that included 32 Hooded Parrots, 12 Peaceful Doves, 2 Gouldian Finches (adult plus juvenile), 4 Long-tailed Finches,12 White-winged Trillers, 2 Rufous Whistlers and 2 White-bellied Cuckoo-shrikes.

Tue 19 Jul Arafura Fantail and Rainbow Pitta East point Reserve Rainforest, Darwin
A single Rainbow Pitta was seen and photographed between the walking track and the road at East Point Reserve in the rainforest, where an Arafura Fantail was subsequently found. Over the following days Arafura Fantails were seen in the forest behind Casuarina Beach, in the rainforest at Fogg Dam, near the East Alligator River in Kakadu NP and at the Palmerston STW
