Published sightings for the week ending 22 May 2011.

Sun 22 May Gouldian Finch Lady Loretta Mine Rd, NW of Mt Isa
Four adult black-headed Gouldian Finches (males and females) and about ten immature birds at a water hole beside the road, approximately 20 km down the Lady Loretta Mine Road, northwest of Mt Isa. The Gouldians were drinking with Zebra and Painted Finches and Pictorella Mannikins.

Pied Currawong, White-browed Robin Ross River Dam Borrow Pits Kelso
Pied Currawong (5) White-browed Robin (2) in trees on water edge on opposite bank to the road, near shelter bench.

Sat 21 May Australian Wood Duck Townsville Town Common Conservation Park
Flock of 20 Australian Wood Duck flew in at the far water at first viewpoint, later one with Pacific Black Duck at the first viewpoint. Very rarely seen at Townsville Common.

Thu 19 May Mangrove Robin, Dusky Moorhen Bushland Beach
1 Mangrove Robin observed for several minutes on branch near the landside edge of the mangrove forest; approximately opposite the old Osprey's nest site - and 1-2 others heard calling from further inside the mangrove forest. Dusky Moorhen (juv) in bulkuru reeds in paperbark swamp; uncommon around Townsville

Tue 17 May Radjah Shelduck Cairns Centenary Lakes saltwater section
Group of seven Radjah Shelduck were found sitting quietly on the western bank near the bridge over the saltwater lake.

Sat 14 May Papuan Frogmouth Top of Gillies Highway
Lovely rufous Frogmouth (female?) sitting on a reflector post at the top of the Gillies Highway at midnight. Altitude here is 8-900m. Is this unusual?

Wed 11 May White-throated Nightjar Palmetum Botanical Garden, Townsville
White-throated Nightjar (1) It was dark and in the shade, but still easily and positively identified as a White-throated Nightjar, confirmed by inspection of the photo attached.
