Patrick,
Young males practise their display techniques for years. Sometimes an adult male will join the group for a short time to show them how it is done. The young males even take turns at playing the female roll. I would suggest that there is something reflective in the UV range in the feathers of brown males as they practise the flicking movement which shifts the green iridescence to blue and v.v. in the adults. Now there is a little displaying of adult males which have just finished their moult. Or is it their malt? No that's me! Females are not interested. Full on displaying gets underway in August and is over by mid December in most years.
Regards,
Alan

Hi all,
A big thanks to all the people who have sent me excellent ideas and
suggestions. I contacted John Chambers at lake Eacham, and for those with
little kiddies, he was very baby friendly. John told me something very
interesting about the Victoria's Riflebird, that it takes 7, yes seven years for the young males to get the dark blue full male colouring and that during June the males seem to practice displaying. John was not sure if it is just
the males getting their full male colours or all the males. This seems
incredible to me.
Happy birding,
Patrick

Hi fellow birders,
I'm thinking of heading up to Cairns in June and wondering if anyone knows what if any birds I might find on the Cairns Esplanade? Also I was reading
that the Victoria's Riflebird displays during the mating season, but does
this mean that it also does other displays at other times of the year as
well, but not the elaborate ones for mating? And I read that some of the
guides do not look for the Golden Bowerbird before August. Does this mean
that it is very difficult to find at other times?
I'd love some feedback,
Patrick
