If you're contemplating rolling your own system, check out Panorama
before committing to Filemaker.

I don't use either product (I use a different toolset that I wouldn't
recommend for a one-person, home project) but, whenever I've looked,
Panorama had a whole lot more on offer than Filemaker. It's just that
it isn't as widely known. Affordable, powerful, flexible,
Mac/Win...and it's been around for ages and ages. Worth a look.
