It's an interesting piece Bob. The front end is good, but I think you could have gone a bit further with your commentary. It would have been helpful if there had been a few extra paragraphs discussing the access fee, the way in which the authorised visits were conducted, the number of birders who participated in those visits, and a summary of their experience.

The issue of incipient racism is a difficult one to resolve. E-mail is a notorious medium for misunderstanding. Whether or not it is founded, the charge of racism is a "frog pond stopper" [the action by an observer that results in the immediate suspension of frog calls].

I think the Princess Parrot irruption has raised a number of cultural issues that will take a bit of time to resolve. I think an ongoing dialogue between traditional owners and the "birding community" may be mutually beneficial.

Regards, Laurie.

Dear all,

My piece on the recent brouhaha over the irruption of Princess parrots to
the west of Alice Springs has been posted at the ABC's Unleashed.

You can see it here: http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/42384.html

Please leave a comment if you have any thoughts, suggestions or corrections
- I think that this story has a fair way to run yet...
