Date: Thursday, September 16, 2010
Location: Lake Hart rest-stop, approx. 40km north-west of Woomera
Bourke's Parrot (Neopsephotus bourkii) (2) Two birds flushed from feeding on
dune surface between vegetation, just a few hundred metres immediately west of
picnic area. Some time passed before they were relocated again, but it could
of-course have been different birds. This would appear to be well south of
their usual range limits.

Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus) (3) In the sedge along Gahnia walk
and between Gahnia Walk and Tea-tree Boardwalk.
Australasian Bittern (Botaurus poiciloptilus) (2) At least two birds (and
possibly three or four) heard booming from Pat-om and Gunawar Walks.

Location: Port Macdonnell
Striated Fieldwren (Calamanthus fuliginosus) (2) Near the windpump in Germain
Reserve.
Hooded Plover (Charadrius rubricollis) (2) On the long beach on Surfers Way
west of Cape Northumberland.
Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) (10) A spectacular sight at
dusk as many birds (at least 10 at a time in view) flew around and landed on
the closest island, immediately to the west of the penguin viewing platform at
Cape Northumberland.

Living Waters.

southern end of the park.

Location: Coopers Creek Crossing, Birdsville Track.
Banded Whiteface (Aphelocephala nigricincta) (1) Small party in low scrub
along detour road from crossing towards Munguaranie.
Brolga (Grus rubicunda) (1) One individual at Coopers creek crossing.
Little Button-quail (Turnix velox) (1) Several birds flushed in Sand dune
growth and flood plains near to Coopers Creek.
Red-browed Pardalote (Pardalotus rubricatus) (1) Birds were encountered in
most of the creek crossings North of Clayton Wetlands, Birdsville Track.
Flock Bronzewing (Phaps histrionica) (1) Many birds at water holes along the
Birdsville Track near Mungauranie bore.
Plumed Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna eytoni) (1) Six birds at Mungauranie Bore,
Birdsville Track.
Wandering Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna arcuata) (1) One lone bird with six
Plumed Whistling Duck at Munguaranie Bore.

Beautiful Firetail (Stagonopleura bella) (6) A group towards the eastern end of
the Loop Road.
Rufous Bristlebird (Dasyornis broadbenti) (3) Many birds singing along the Loop
Road and near Jack's Point. Two birds seen on the Loop Road and one on the
Princes Highway.

Location: Strzelecki Track
Cinnamon Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma cinnamomeum) (6) Two males "fighting" over
territory at the mine site near the Rusty Car. Confrontation went on for some
time, before one wisely retreated. Four found at the two gates site on the
mound east of the first gate (heading north).
Rufous Fieldwren (Calamanthus campestris) (1) Flushed at the two gates site on
the same mound.
Chirruping Wedgebill (Psophodes cristatus) (6) At least six seen at the mine
site, moving along the dry watercourses.
Australian Pratincole (Stiltia isabella) (8) On the road near Mt Lyndhurst
Station - both small flocks and indiviiduals.
Inland Dotterel (Peltohyas australis) (1) Adjacent to the road north of Mt.
Lyndhurst Station.

Location: Rocky Gully Wetland, Murray Bridge.
Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) (1) Yet another exceedingly wet wetland.
The water is back but bird numbers and variety have not yet recovered from the
'Great Drying'. It was interesting to see about 25 very active and noisy
Black-winged Stilt at Rocky Gully, as we have not seen any on recent visits to
Milang, Clayton and Goolwa.

Location: Riverglades Wetlands, Murray Bridge
White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica) (1) A single White-necked Heron feeding
along south eastern shore of Riverglades. About 20 Great Egret and 5
White-faced Heron also present.
Only recently Riverglades was a dried out, weed choked paddock. Suddenly it is
'bank full', with a section of the track from Murray Drive to the river under
water. Well worth a visit.
