Sun 22 Aug Rufous Owl Kewarra Beach, Cairns Northern Beaches
A pair of Rufous Owls appear to be preparing to breed at my place at the
base of the range in the Kewarra Beach hinterland. They first appeared
on 03/08/10 & have been very vocal daily ever since. Usually a
relatively quiet species, they have been calling from about 8pm each
night with their normal double hoot & call through the night as well. At
around 6am each morning they use their single hoot rather softly as they
settle to roost. This very uncommon species is most vocal at the onset
of breeding & there are a number of large paperbarks with good hollows
available to them in the immediate area, so I am hopeful they will breed
here. A very rough pic of the female is attached. Her male has his tail
feathers totally missing, so they are easily separable visually if they
are not calling.
