Published sightings for the week ending 1 Aug 2010.
Sun 1 Aug Wedge-tailed Eagle Budderoo National Park (Budderoo
Plateau)
I spent two hours on the Plateau at Budderoo NP this afternoon. As soon
as I started walking the Budderoo Track, I heard a Peregrine Falcon's
call above me. Looking up, I found the Falcon harassing a Wedge-tailed
Eagle. The Eagle folded its wings and it fell into a swoop, with the
Peregrine doing the same, pursuing the Eagle angrily. Both birds
disappeared over the horizon. Spectacular stuff - something I've never
seen. There were very few sightings of other birds on the Plateau due to
blowy conditions. An Eastern Bristlebird was heard calling (and, I
thought, imitating a Grey Shrike-thrush; the literature doesn't seem to
say Bristlebirds copy other bird calls; maybe, I was mistaken). A few
Southern Emu-wrens were also heard, but not seen. A pair of Gang-gang
Cockatoos were seen huddled in a swaying, wind-swept gum at the southern
end of the track.

Bar-shouldered Dove, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo Red Hill in
the Cromer-Beacon Hill area
I've heard the Bar-shouldered dove a few times here, but only managed to

Wed 28 Jul Brolga 20km west of Condobolin
Finished off a trip out west by a visit to Round Hill NR - the rain had
made the road through the reserve impassable but nice sightings of
Speckled Warblers, Crested Bellbird, Splendid Fairy-wrens and
White-winged Trillers by the roadside just after Round Hill. Then down
near the Lachlan River, a Striped Honeyeater in the trees along the
riverbank, a pair of Spotted Harriers hunting over the field opposite
and a bit further along the road a Brolga quietly feeding by the
roadside.

Sacred Kingfisher Concord
One in the mangroves near Kokoda Memorial Trail. Also a Yellow-rumped
Thornbill near the RSL. (Moderators Note: Sometimes immature Sacred
Kingfishers winter in mangroves or in heaviliy vegetated freshwater
wetlands instead of migrating northwards).

Tue 27 Jul Barking Owl Cremorne Point, Sydney
I found this barking owl just off the walking track at Cremorne Point.
It was on the eastern side of the track in some dense bush (but only a
couple of meters off the track) about 50m from where the track ends. It
was causing huge consternation amongst the crow population of Cremorne
Point although most of the local joggers weren't too concerned!

Flame and Scarlet Robins, Diamond Firetails Megalong Valley and
Shipley's Plateau - Blue Mountains, NSW
I had some good birding today in the Megalong Valley and Shipley's
Plateau in the Blue Mountains. Some of the highlight birds included at
least 2 male Flame Robins as well as at least 2 pairs of Scarlet Robins,
Red-browed Tree-creeper, Bassian Thrush, Gang-gang Cockatoos, 10 Diamond
Firetails and Crescent Honeyeater. One of my best moments was when I
squeaked and I then had all these small birds (Diamond Firetails,
Yellow-rumped Thornbills and Blue Wrens) hop on some rocks a few metres
in front of me. I certainly love this part of the Blue Mountains.

Peregrine Falcon Moore Park, Surry Hills
A male (from size) came flying past at full pelt this morning only a
metre off the ground, chasing three Crested Pigeons. Vanished from sight
before I had time to see the outcome, but I respotted it a minute later
without any prey. Flew off towards Centennial Park.
