Thanks everybody so far. I appreciate the comments and it seems the Monarchs
are pretty good. A little concerned about the problem with the eye cups
mentioned by Chris. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Another pair I was thinking of looking at are the Vanguard 10.5x45 Endeavour
ED. Also getting good raps but don't known anyone who has had a Vanguard,
except of course the old paddock bomb I learnt to drive in haha. Has anybody
tried them?
Oh and thanks Paul, but don't think the next pair of bins will go the way of
the last! I hope!

I'm unsure what series I have, but purchased a pair of Nikon Monarchs 10x42
in c.1999 for about $750. Unfortunately all of the print on them has worn
off, which says something about the treatment that they have endured, yet
they still remain quite clear and are absolutely brilliant in my book. I
have recently upgraded to a pair of Zeiss 10x42 Victory, and while the Zeiss
are worth every penny, the Nikon's do still stack up well beside them. I
doubt you would ever not be able to identify a bird seen in the Nikon's vs
Zeiss, but the Zeiss do show fine detail such as colour bands or small sex
differences in plumage. But, much like glasses, if you don't know what you
are missing, you don't miss it.
So, I can only imagine the range improving over time, whatever the new
models have, but my 2c worth would be that investing in Nikon Monarchs would
be well worth the money, particularly if there is a chance that they'll end
up on a car roof!
