Hi all,
Looks like there has been some great sea-watching from Boambee Headland,
Sawtell, NSW!
Is there more information on the Little Shearwater, which is quite a rare bird
here (especially at this time of the year)? How was a Flutterer ruled out?
Especially at strongly back-lit conditions, Flutterers can appear contrastingly
black-and-white and "mimic" a Little Shearwater.
Also, on the background of the sad decrease of Southern Giant-petrel due to
long-line fishing, I would be interested how Northern Giant-petrel was ruled
out. I know that Southern used to be the commoner one in NSW waters, but over
the last three years at least I see a trend of Northern becoming the more
common
one.

Published sightings for the week ending 25 Jul 2010.
Sun 25 Jul Red-capped Robin, Chestnut-rumped Heathwren Karloo
Track, Royal NP
A single female Red-capped Robin on the Karloo track, near the top of
the hill between Karloo Pool and Uloola Falls. It gave brief, but good
views before flying off. The red forehead was clearly visible,
indicating a mature adult female. Also a single Chestnut-rumped
Heathwren at the same spot, flying past. Overall on the
Waterfall-Heathcote walk there were more Eastern Spinebills and New
Holland Honeyeaters than I've seen before as well as a few White-eared
Honeyeaters.

Sat 24 Jul Swift Parrots Mt Druit (about 10 km west of Blacktown
CBD)
Mark Fuller and I saw at least 23 Swift Parrots feeding on the grounds
of Mt Druit swimming pool and the around the library opposite where Mark
had reported them a few days ago. They were showing well throughout this
morning with one bird coming down to a low Eucalypt within a few metres
above the ground. The Swifties appeared to be feeding on flowering
Spotted Gums, the lerps in Grey boxes. Also lots of Musk and Rainbow
Lorikeets about and some White-winged Choughes.

Fri 23 Jul Yellow-nosed Albatross, Southern Giant-Petrel Off
Boambee Headland, Sawtell, NSW
Single Yellow-nosed Albatross seen, following and alighting behind a
trawler for a while; also single Southern Giant-Petrel in close. Also
seen were up to 100 Australian Gannets, as well as Silver Gulls and
Crested Terns. Very distant unidentified albatross and shearwaters.

Thu 22 Jul Yellow-nosed Albatross, Little Shearwater Off Boambee
Headland, Sawtell, NSW
Single Yellow-nosed Albatross and single Little Shearwater seen
reasonably close in, providing good views. Also seen were up to 50
Australian Gannets, along with the usual Silver Guls and Crested Terns.

At least four swifties in amongst the Musk Lorikeets at Mt Druitt
(swimming pool and library area).

Wed 21 Jul Mistletoebird Dee Why RSL
After School sport me and Joshua Bergmark could hear a Mistletoebird
calling and soon a Lovely Male Mistletoebird flew over us at about 5m.
Note: There was another Birdline report of a Mistletoebird in Dee Why by
Henry Coleman (Another School-mate by the way =P) last month. It's good
to know they are still around

Tue 20 Jul Beautiful Firetail, Rock Warbler, and many New Holland
Honeyeaters Rusden Head Track, Little Forest, Morton National Park
While New Holland Honeyeater is a common species I have never seen so
many in one place at one time. There were literally hundreds of them
along with mobs of Red Wattlebirds. Also seen were Rock Warblers and a
Beautiful Firetail. More details can be seen on my blog.

Eastern Curlews, Hooded Plovers, Double-Banded Plovers Racecoure
Beach. Ulladulla
This morning 11am, 2 Eastern Curlews took to flight on my approach on
the rocky shelf at Racecourse Beach. 7 Hooded Plovers with 2 imm and 3
Double -Banded Plovers, one in breeding plumage were sighted there also.
Seems to be an wintering spot for the Hoodies.

Sun 18 Jul Spotted Quail-thrush, Wonga Pigeon, Chestnut-rumped
Heathwren, Varied Sitella Bents Basin SRA (nr Wallacia, Western Sydney)
Many good birds seen during my 3 hrs walk in the Bents Basin SRA
including: single Spotted Quail-thrush, a small flock of White-winged
Choughs, two Wonga Pigeons (feeding in the camping area), few flocks of
Varied Sitella, single Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens, 3 Azure Kingfishers,
two Olive-backed Orioles, Rose Robins, Buff-rumped Thornbills. On my way
back to Wallancia I oberved one Little Eagle mobbed by miners and
magpies.

Australasian Bittern, Baillon's Crake, Glossy Ibis,
Yellow-billed Spoonbill, Pink-eared Duck The Northern (9) Road (from
Penrith to Cobbity Rd)
Excellent selection od water birds on small farm dams along the both
sides of The Northern (9) Road. One A. Bittern was sunbathing at the
edge of vegetation of small dam (on the army grounds. Single Baillon's
Crake was just feeding nearby. Other interesting birds included: 3 small
groups of Yellow-billed Spoonbills, one Glossy Ibis, large flock (23
birds) of Hoary-headed Grebe, 4 small flocks (3-6 birds) of A.
Shovellers, 3 Pink-eared ducks, few Red-kneeled Dotterels, black-fronted
dotterels (very common), Little Grassbird.

Little Raven Cornwallis Rd, Richmond (approx 55km NW of Sydney
CBD)
At least 2 Little Ravens were seen with a small group of Australian
Ravens beside Cornwallis Rd this afternoon and a Brown Falcon.

Square-tailed Kite, Grey Goshawk Mitchell Park, Cattai (approx.
55km NW of Sydney CBD)
One adult Square-tailed Kite was seen flying over Mitchell Park late in
the morning. A Grey Goshawk was also heard beside Cattai Creek. Other
birds seen around Mitchell Park included several Bar-shouldered and
Peaceful Doves, 2 Wonga Pigeons, a Brown Cuckoo-dove, Fan-tailed Cuckoo
and Shining Brown-cuckoo also heard.

Grey Goshawk Cranebrook, NSW
Observed along a section of new Castlereagh Rd where it hits the 60kph
mark heading into Penrith. Excellent views in a tree. Grey phase.

Nankeen Night Heron Richmond Lowlands
nankeen Night Herons in the same trees Saturday and Sunday mornings at
Pugh's Lagoon. This morning I also observed two Azure Kingfishers and a
pair of Collared Sparrowhawks around 9am. One Kingfisher landed in a
tree about 6m from me.

Sat 17 Jul Beach Stone Curlew, Varied Triller, Red-backed
Fairy-Wren Red Rock, north of Coffs Harbour
1 Beach Stone Curlew seen hiding in mangroves on sand banks in middle of
estuary (tide was in, so possibility of another bird hiding too).
Several Sacred Kingfishers sitting on the sand too and feeding Eastern
Curlew and Bar-tailed Godwits, several Double-banded Dotterel and a pair
of Red-apped Dotterel. Seen from the boardwalk loop were Varied Triller,
Red Backed Wren, Bar-Shouldered Dove, 3 Spangled Drongos and party of
Varied Sitellas.

At least 8 Jacana on the lake, a single Musk Duck on open water the
south side (furthest from road) and at least 3 Whistling Ducks

Pacific Baza Cumberland State Forest (West Pennant Hills, NSW)
We saw one adult Pacific Baza foraging along the edge of the forest near
the IBM building and about mid-afternoon.

Fri 16 Jul Brown Quail, Gull-billed Tern Urunga, Nr Coffs Harbour
Small covey of 5 quail seen in the rough ground at the seaward end of
the boardwalk. Single Gull-billed tern in with the Crested Terns loafing
on the rock walls where the 2 rivers join (ie seen from boardwalk) Also
several Sacred Kingfishers seen and 5 Bar-tailed Godwit feeding in
Urunga Lagoon.

Thu 15 Jul Rose-crowned Fruit Dove, Logrunners Dorrigo Nat'l Park
1 Rose-crowned Fruit Dove flushed from feeding on fallen fruit near car
park for The Glade picnic area and several pairs of Logrunners on
various tracks around the visitor centre. Also a pair of Wedge-tailed
Eagles seen from the skywalk. No thrushes seen

Four or five birds calling and feeding in large fig tree approx 4pm.
Also several vocal Green Catbirds, a single Pale Yellow Rpbin seen and a
