Sun 23 May      Scarlet Honeyeater Gresswell Lake, Bundoora 
At least three Scarlet Honeyeaters still around at the Main Drive side
of Gresswell Lake. Feeding busily, they seemed blissfully unconcerned
about my presence.

Pilot National Park (Chiltern) 
Speckled Warbler: with Mixed Feeding Flock (~7 other species) (1).
Painted Button-quail: (3). Rose Robin: Female (1).

        Turquoise Parrot Bartleys Block, Chiltern 
A pair sitting quietly in Red Gum (2).

        Spotted Harrier and Black Falcon Rodborough Rd, Moolort Plains 
Pair of Spotted Harriers seen over farmland south of Long Swamp - last
seen in this area back on 9th March this year. A single Black Falcon
also sighted nearby.

Wandering along the edge of the road. Presumably an escapee.

        Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater Long Forest Nature Conservation Reserve
There were loads of honeyeaters near the Djerriwarrh track today
including two Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters.

        Scarlet Honeyeaters Banyule Flats, Heidelberg 
One male and one female near Windmill Gate on Riverside Track, feeding
in Grey Mistletoe clumps. Much twitter and peeping - there could be more
birds present than just one pair.

        Fan-tailed Cuckoo, Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo, White-bellied
Sea-Eagle Lake Mokoan (Winton Wetlands) 
Fan-tailed Cuckoo: out of season sighting, trilling call heard and then
seen in Liquidambar tree in gardens opposite boat ramp. Horsfield's
Bronze-Cuckoo: two heard calling then seen in dead trees around lake
edge, out of season as well. White-bellied Sea-Eagle: roosting on dead
branch near remaining pools of water.

        Hooded Robin Dave's Hill Thoona 
Nine seen in an open paddock adjacent to the hill, hopping around like
Flame Robins with Southern Whiteface, Yellow-rumped Thornbill and
Diamond Firetails. Six male and three female birds. An exceptional
number at one location.

Sat 22 May      Swift Parrot, Dusky Woodswallow Chiltern Mt Pilot
National Park (Chiltern) 
Swift Parrot: 3 groups seen (max 4 in one group) (4). Dusky Woodswallow:
Huge flock feeding in Euc Blossom.

        Swift Parrot, Purple-crowned Lorikeet You Yangs, around Info
centre 
At one occassion had successive waves of swifties flying out of a single
medium sized tree. To my astonishment that single tree harboured 50+
parrots. Since there were still some other birds close by , the total
count must be at least 70 Swifties. Feeding on blossom and lerp alike.
Also Purple Crowned Lories around in good numbers. 2 or 3 Crested
Shrike-tits, 3 male Flame Robins at Toynes Rd.

        Painted Button-quail You Yangs 
Two birds foraging only 200 m from the visitor center around 4 pm. Great
views! Some Swift Parrots also still around and several Diamond
Firetails on the Eastern Paddocks.

        Swift Parrot, Purple-crowned Lorikeet, Peregrine Falcon Boweya
Forest 
Swift Parrot: lovely hearing this bird calling about the forest, most
(47) on the north west side of the forest feeding on lerp in Grey Box, a
few (3) on the Wangaratta Rd. Purple-crowned Lorikeet: amazingly common,
mostly on north west side of the forest in flowering Mugga Ironbark
(60). Peregrine Falcon: a male bird seen stooping overhead, a few
minutes later seen low over paddocks with a Galah in its talons.

One male Scarlet Honeyeater in Peppercorn tree at rear of Ceres, 08.30

Fri 21 May      Collared Sparrowhawk Damper Creek Reserve, Mount
Waverley, Vic 3149 
Chasing feral spotted turtle doves and native crested pigeons feeding on
seed bell in a yard that backs onto the Damper Creek Reserve in suburban
Melbourne.

        Painted Button-quail, Swift Parrot, Lorikeets You Yangs Regional
Park 
Two painted button-quail seen from the Big Rock Track about 500m from
the car park. A few Swift Parrots in flowering gums near the office,
also Purple-crowned Lorikeets, and a flock of Musk Lorikeets arrived
just before sunset.

        Banded Stilt Avalon Beach 
3 seen roosting on sand spit in wetlands and later feeding in water. On
LHS side of road if you're driving down towards the beach.

        Brolga Lake Wendouree, Ballarat 
A pair of Brolgas was feeding in the aquatic vegetation in the now
largely flooded lake at around 0845 this morning. Other birds present
included Pacific Black Ducks, Black Swans, White-faced Herons,
Long-billed and Little Corellas, Masked Lapwings, Common Coots, Silver
Gulls, Magpie Larks, Magpies, Common Starlings and Egrets. The latter
were a bit far off for me to identify with confidence but they seemed to
be Intermediate Egrets.

Thu 20 May      Musk Lorikeet Mt Burnett near Cockatoo, Dandenong Ranges
5 flying around and eventually heading west at about 7am Uncommon in the
hills here.

        Grey (White) Goshawk Northcote Police Station 
A single white morph Grey Goshawk flushed from a treetop perch by
mobbing Red Wattlebirds and Little Ravens - disappeared to the south
over the High Street shopping strip! Around 08h15.

        Wedge-tailed Eagle Anakie Gorge, Anakie 
6 birds seen circling high over the gorge. One bird was performing the
"undulating pot hook" display, a possible sign that breeding will soon
take place in the area.

Wed 19 May      Australasian Shoveler, Blue-billed Duck Fishers Wetland,
Phillip Island 
Four female and four male Australasian Shovelers seen amongst Chestnut
Teal on the far side of the wetland, also observed a female Blue-billed
Duck in the pond nearest to the car park and a male Flame Robin.

Tue 18 May      powerful owl Pt Gellibrand, Williamstown 
A powerful owl has been in the area for several weeks. I saw it tonight
(I got as close as four metres). It was in a small tree looking around
for prey. A beautiful creature.

Lone robin dancing around wetlands near the mouth of the Laverton River.

        Wedge-tailed Eagle Liverpool Rd Retarding Basin, Knox City 
2 Wedge-tailed Eagles seen mid morning above the retarding basin being
harsssed by Magpies, Ravens and a pair of Spur Winged Plovers.

Mon 17 May      Cattle Egret Yarrawonga 
Two birds seen over the irrigation channel on the south side of town.
First sighting this autumn/winter when they are infrequent visitors.

        Swift Parrots and Noisy Friarbirds Mia Mia Track, Newstead 
5 or 6 Swift Parrots - twos and singles along Mia Mia Track. Numbers
appear to have dropped off from a few weeks back. Also a number of
flocks of Red Wattlebirds mixed with Noisy Friarbirds heading in an
easterly direction - my first sighting of the latter species in the
Newstead area.

Sun 16 May      Cattle Egret Melton Gilgai Woodland in Harkness Road 
Two Cattle Egrets seen in a horse paddock in Harkness Road, near the
woodland. Previously one Cattle Egret was recorded here in April 2008

        Painted Honeyeater, Swift Parrot Kooyoora State Park (Wehla
Block) 
Along Grassy Flat Road about 400 metres south from Logan Wehla Rheola
Road were 3 Painted Honeyeaters (2 adults and an immature) amongst a
heap of nectar feeders including many Purple-crowned Lorikeets and 7
Swift Parrots. Swift Parrots were in small groups throughout the forests
of the Wehla-Moliagul district.

        Swift Parrot Tunstalls Nature Conservation Reserve 
There were at least 100 birds in this reserve (near Bealiba) on Sunday
and 70 on Saturday 15th in another part of the forest so may or may not
have been the same birds as those on Sunday. Certainly there would be
more than the 100 birds I saw there.

Goshawk and Little Eagle Merri Creek, Brunswick-Coburg 
All seen on the 3 monthly Merri Ck survey organised by Friends of the
Merri Creek. Peregrine and Hobby just south of Blyth St. Sparrowhawk in
CERES, Goshawk and Little Eagle in Coburg. Eagle and Hobby being
harassed by Little Ravens. Peregrine being harassed by Pied Currawongs.

3 Blue-faced HEs seen late afternoon. Musk, Little and Purple-crowned
Lorikeets feeding in the flowering gums.

        Spotted Quail-thrush, Red-capped Robin, Scarlet Honeyeater
Heathcote-Graytown National Park 
A Spotted Quail-thrush spotted by Peter Rogers and then seen by a few in
the group. 2 male Red-capped Robins near Graytown in a large mixed flock
with (amongst others) Scarlet and Flame Robins. 3-4 Scarlet Honeyeater
near Mt. Black.

Fri 14 May      Red-capped Robin Mont Albert North 
One immature feeding in association with Superb Fairy-wrens, on drying
wetland ajacent to Koonung Creek.

Sun 9 May       Orange-bellied Parrot & Australasian Bittern Western
Treatment Plant, Werribee 
2 OBP's sitting in flag reed. The Bittern, which is extraordinarliy
confiding if approached quietly in the car, was in the channel 200m west
of the grader at the 150E Outlet. Other good birds - Sharp-tailed
Sandpiper in full breeding plumage (fbp) (a late record) and a Curlew
Sandpiper and a Red-necked Stint in fbp, 2 Blue-winged Parrots (on
Saturday 8th), 3 Wedge-tailed Eagles (2 adults & 1 young), 4 (Sat) & 3
(Sun) Brolgas and finally a Black Wallaby on the edge of the newly
graded Western Lagoon.

Werribee 
Orange-bellied Parrot: 2 seen flying north-east to south-west at 6:50am.
Brolga: 3 seen in flight over Point Wilson Road in the evening, heading
towards T-Section Lagoons.

Fri 7 May       Orange-bellied Parrot Western Treatment Plant, Werribee 
2 birds flushed from phragmites on road-side. At least 1 bird showing
brightly coloured belly. Flew 200 metres in northerly direction landing
in low vegetation.

Sat 1 May       White-backed Swallow 5km north of Axedale 
7 White-backed Swallows flying east. No wind, clear sky. Only photo I
could get!
