Birdline Central & Southern Queensland 

Published sightings for the week ending 16 May 2010.

Sat 15 May      Pictorella Mannikin. Lark Quarry 
5 km sth of Lark Quarry there was a small flock of Pictorella Mannikin.
- an very southerly record. Also seen here were Spinifexbird. 20 km sth
of Lark Quarry we saw Rufous-crowned Emu-Wren, and in the Lark Quarry
car park we saw a pair of Painted Finch. [Ed note: there are only 2 more
southerly reports of Pictorella Mannikin - Cravens Peak Nature Refuge
Qld, and the Birdsville Tk in South Australia. TD]

Fri 14 May      White-winged Black Tern Jumpinpin, South Stradbroke
Island 
One bird in breeding plumage roosting amongst large numbers of Crested
Tern, Common Tern, Little Tern and Silver Gull. Only the second sighting
for the island.

Mon 10 May      Sanderling Inskip Point 
3 birds on tidal sand bar off the point.

Sat 8 May       Plumed Whistling-Duck Clarendon Boundary Rd Dam, Lockyer
Valley 
dam banks were covered with them (800+). this is a small private?
property dam viewable from the road, very close to Lake Clarendon (where
no whistling ducks were seen) no photos

Fri 7 May       Cotton Pygmy-goose Lake Clarendon, Lockyer Valley 
female (or immature?), dark cap with distinct large light eyebrow
separating cap from eye and back of neck area; long dark stripe
horizontally through eye area; about 2/3 size of Pacific Black Duck;
eating around floating weeds, not diving; darker back, otherwise light
brown/greyish with flecking, no photos (1). on rockwall side of dam
around the tower where the martin nests are.

Fri 16 Apr      Royal Albatross near Herald Island, NNW of Townsville 
A Royal Albatross was photographed from a fishing vessel near Herald
island, 2km off Qld coast at about same latitude as Paluma between
Townsvillw & Cairns. Sharon Leamonth of GBRMPA sent this image to Del
Richards to ID, who has since forwarded it to me for comment.
