Well a few years ago near Canberra, White-fronted Chats were
misidentified as White Wagtails. I think that is a closer mismatch. And
I also know of a young Channel-billed Cuckoo being fed by Pied
Currawongs accused in a local (south coast NSW newspaper) of being a
Sea-Eagle.

Subject: Misidentified Birds
On the topic of misidentifying a Willie Wagtail for a baby Pied
Currawong,
my cousin remarked once on the White-fronted Chats which we used to see
(now
sadly no longer there) in the park at The Entrance in early 80's as
'baby
magpies' - but the rest of the family who knew better (including the
non-birders and non environmentally-inclined) was amused at the time!
Cheers,
Frank
