Hi all,
By all means, stick up for Rainbows - in their own habitat!

However, as a 'feral' in Perth and Tasmania, they either are, or have the
potential to be, a real environmental problem, and people who "like the pretty
birds" are part of the major difficulties in controlling them.

The Department or Primary Industries, Water and the Environment here in
Tasmania have been trying for some time to eradicate the feral populations of
Rainbow Lorikeets, and having little success, as those who feed them in their
gardens are not prepared to help. The Department has declared them a
prohibited import, so Pet Shops can no longer sell them here. In a few years'
time, they plan to declare them illegal to own. These two moves should prevent
further supplementation of the feral populations, but unfortunately, numbers of
these are beginning to skyrocket through natural breeding! Does not bode well
for the future of Swift Parrots, unless the Department can find some more
success in their eradication attempts, I'm afraid.
