In the Gloucester and Mid-North Coast area, we are experiencing a huge
cicada season along with a huge Christmas beetle season, the latter
stripping the isolated gums in the paddocks and along the roads. the
last time that happened was Christmas 2002/03.
Haven't yet noticed any remarkable behaviour in the local birds due to
this but breeding is still in full swing with Figbirds, Dollarbirds,
Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes, Sacred Kingfisher, Kookaburras etc. very busy.
Last year I watched a Red Wattlebird dismembering a cicada. Took it
about 4 minutes (a long time for a meal I thought), a lot of bashing to
remove legs and wings, and then cleaned up the legs after the body was
swallowed.
