Quick visit from 7pm until 830pm. Highlight was the good number of waders at
the Astrolabe Park end with 24+ Sharp-tailed Sandpipers and at least 19 Lathams
Snipe, many of latter showing well feeding at dusk. Other good sightings
included 3 separate European Greenfinch, 5 Red-rumped Parrot, 4 Black-fronted
Dotterel, flock of 12 Masked Plover, abundant Fairy Martins, nesting Coot and
Aust Grebe, several Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, and large numbers of
Red-browed Finch including many recently-fledged juveniles (this is a breeding
stronghold for this species in the inner city). Several pairs of Red and Little
Wattlebird had young. Also a large Eastern Water Dragon swallowing a small
tortoise, and an unidentified short-necked tortoise species. No sign of native
hen.
Seems like a coordinated fledging of Koels in the inner city - I had 4
sightings in inner Sydney over the weekend, and heard others; at least 3 were
being tended to by Red Wattlebirds.
Cheers, Eric
