Hi Peter, I was using the term 'original' rather loosely but although my 1946 edition of Cayley's 'What bird is that?' and my 1912 edition of 'An Australian bird book' by Leach both refer to the species as 'Tawny Frogmouth' both give an alternate common name of "Tawny-shouldered Frogmouth'. I read somewhere that 'Tawny Frogmouth' was the shortened version of 'Tawny-shouldered Frogmouth' and this makes a lot of sense. Greg Clancy Ecologist Coutts Crossing |
