Hi Brian,
I encountered a Painted Button-Quail nest a couple of years ago and the
female flushed off the nest at about 10m distance but didn't make a broken
wing display. That isn't to say they never do (after all, they are
shorebirds!) but my only experience so far is that they haven't. The nest
had eggs (3 from memory, but it was a while ago).
