Hej!

One drawback with the UK system is that you need to be a member and quite
dedicated to use it. You cant just do a quick search for whatever you want
to know. I think that I have sent info before about the swedish system
which I find excellent. Have a look here:

note- change date to thursday 29th so there will be some birds reported!

This system is run by Government funding (Tell your politicians how to
keep an eye on the wildlife the easy way!!!!) and is free to use. Similar
setups can be found in Norway and New Zealand. Here you can see whats hot
(red highlight) or in your area quick and easy. How quick is of course a
matter of how fast people add their sightings. In the beginning people
were reluctant to add their sightings but now most birders actually use
this. You can also keep an eye on your personal year list(and compare to
others ;-) ). The local rarities committees take care of some
administration of reports and also can they decide if reported birds shall
be visible for all users or not. That is the case for rarer species like
some owls, reptors and woodpeckers.

There used to be a paging system in Sweden too but it was abandoned in
favour for a mobilphone based system instead - The BMS - bird messaging
system. Big drawback is that you need a quite fancy phone with the right
operative system(Symbian or Windows mobile) but otherwise it is ecxellent.
It is run by the twitchers Club300 and yearly cost: about 60AU$+the
fee/kB´s used.

There also used to be, during a couple of years, a textmessage system. I
think the guy in charge of the admin got fed up and no one really had the
energy to continue. Probably because the BMS expanded and people moved to
that. The text message system worked like this: Someone saw a bird and
sent a text to a special phonenumber, from the central text´s where sent
to all users. The system was divided so each county or similar area had
their own group of users. The cost was less than 0,2 AU$/message.

Ciao
