Hi all
The Emus in the ADI site in western Sydney are definitely still there and can
often be seen from the Northern Road (and probably other roads adjoining the
site) at the Cambridge Gardens/Cranebrook area, along with mobs of Eastern Grey
Kangaroos. I have never seen any Red Kangaroos from the site fringes - they are
listed as there but introduced on the fauna list at the Save the ADI website
http://www.adisite.org/Fauna_images2.html.
This site does not list the Emu as being introduced here, and there seems no
reason why this species should not have thrived in this area pre European
settlement - given there are historical records all the way to the Sydney
coastline. Unless there is some kind of documented reference to an introduction
this subject should be treated carefully, as it could be an element in the
ongoing efforts to save sections of this site from development. The site
appears to contain some of the last extensive remnants of Cumberland Plain
woodland, and the site has a bird list (likely incomplete, especially given the
limited access) of over 120 species including Black Bittern, Diamond Firetail,
Speckled Warbler, Aust Owlet-nightjar, as well as other vulnerable flora and
fauna.
Cheers
Eric
