Good try Shirley.

Is it time to concede not only the battle but also the war on the use and abuse of the humble apostrophe?

After 35 years of trying to teach the fine art of using this little understood part of punctuation in the classroom, I despair that it was perhaps all in vain.

There is a small glimmer of hope. My daughter has held the banner high now for over 15 years as the self declared "Apostrophe Nazi" in her school, ostentatiously correcting all errors on notices in the staff room. She is sorely tempted to carry a permanent marker when out shopping, threatening many times to apply the same fervent, vigorous editing on all advertising banners.

The Apostrophe is dead.
Long live the Apostrophe.
